I've loved Rui for years, he's been incredibly comforting to me. The reason I love him has developed over time as I've began to understand him as a character more,
from "Hehehe this guy looks funny, I think I'll like him" In the beginning to deeply relating to and loving his personality.
His story of being unable to fit in with others is very meaningful to me, the way in which his differences set him apart from other people, while
not being something he can choose to forget.
The fact that he'll never be "like" other people, and chooses loneliness over pretending to be somebody he isn't.
Even so, his remaining true to
himself is what has brought him to
the amazing people in his life.

My favorite of his event stories is probably "Deeper and Deeper".
In the story, he creates a play based on himself in which a monster tries
desperately to pass as a human, but fails and is found anyway.
He accepts that he'll never truly be human, and maybe he'll never
even be able to live peacefully with them, but he still cares deeply about humanity.
The humans agree to let him
live, but continue to observe him to ensure he truly isn't dangerous.
The ending is ambiguous, but...
"'Even so, there’s one thing we can say for certain——'
'That the once-lonely monster… is lonely no more.'"
Rui claims the role of the villan.......
and openly acts exaggeratedly insane around others. He believes there's something "wrong" with him, thinks he's a bad person.
Despite this, Rui has consistently been shown to be incredibly kind and considerate, constantly checking on the wellbeing of those he cares about.
Despite occasional childishness, he's one of the more emotionally mature people in the entire cast.
